Based on my particular experience of this company, and I have given them the benefit of the doubt, allowing every oppurtunity for the company reps to show integrity and fair play, I must strongly advise consumers to avoid any carphonewarehouse offers on mobile phones.

Don't allow yourself to be seduced by the special offers and chequeback schemes that appear to offer you a cheaper deal/package over the life of your contract.

The chequeback scheme promises to send you back rebate cheques over the life of your contract every few bills (specified at the onset).

They tell you that the qualifying chequeback bill will contain information drawing your attention to the fact you need to post the bill back (to Carphonewarehouse ) to get the rebate cheque.

Not true (in my experience). A few months into my contract it suddenly occured to me that I hadn't received a chequeback notification from CPW. On contacting them (a few email communications) they asked me to send back the qualifying bill (my 6th bill).

That bill had no message on it to notify me of a chequeback entitlement. If I hadn't prompted, CPW would have been happy to ignore my entitlement to the chequeback. I wonder how many other consumers have been ripped off this way?

It doesn't stop there .....

I sent the bill back. Now because I bought 2 phones (one each for my wife and I) which I pay for, the bill is always for both numbers.

I sent that bill back to CPW, expecting to receive 2 cheques of £45 each for each phone I have on contract. I only got a single cheque for £45.00.

I contacted CPW again. Initially, they said two cheques had been sent and that I should be paitient to receive both. I waited but it never arrived. I contacted them again by email and after several back and forth, they insist they never received the bill for the second phone. How peculiar. They must have the bill since they sent me one cheque for the first phone - the same bill document covers both phones (on different pages/sections).

After some back and forth, I get a final response from CPW to the effect of ''No we don't have your bill, and in anycase we did tell you to send bills separately'' ..

Hello? No you didn't! And I get the one bill for both phones, not separate bills.

I'm I being unfair to say this company is ripping me off? OK you may say £45 is not much in the grand scheme of things, but multiply that by God knows how many number of unsuspecting customers who are not being paid their chequeback entitlements?

Stay away from them ... go to a more reputable outfit. I can't wait for my contract to end so I can walk.

For anyone interested ... the email trail between carphonewarehouse and I.

Update from MR JTW - 25 July 2008

I got a phone call this evening from a friendly chap at Carphonewarehouse HQ. They are going to issue me a cheque for the £45 due on my second phone. The chap gave me his direct line number and I am to give him a call if the cheque doesn't arrive in the next few days.

Futrther, I am told that next time I need to separate the bill into two for each phone and send them in separate envelopes. He says this is required because it is such a 'massive operation' staff only (have time to ) look at the front page of each returned bill and don't go beyond page one.

OK so it is alright for CPW to save money by sending the invoice for both phones to me as a single bill in one envelope, but it ain't alright for me to save money too by sending it back in one envelope to claim my chequeback? mmmmmmmmm.

I will write to clik2complaints again when I get my cheque.
